  5.     Australia came clean last week about a television soap opera
  6. that had offended Malaysia and damaged diplomatic and trade
  7. relations between the two countries. In Kuala Lumpur,
  8. Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans called on the show's
  9. main critic, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, and
  10. delivered a letter from Prime Minister Bob Hawke that Malaysian
  11. officials described as a virtual apology.

  13.     The soap opera, Embassy, chronicles the goings-on at the
  14. Australian embassy in a fictional nation in Southeast Asia
  15. called Ragaan, which Mahathir contends is an unflattering
  16. version of his country. Since the program began appearing on
  17. television last fall, Malaysia has protested by reducing
  18. diplomatic and social contact with Australian officials and
  19. encouraging an informal "Buy Australian Last" campaign.

  21.     The daily Melbourne Age blistered Evans for "cringing and
  22. curtsying to mollify Maha thir." Evans denied using "the
  23. language of apology"; Hawke said he merely acknowledged that
  24. "some things" had caused offense. Meanwhile Embassy, a
  25. production of the government-owned Australian Broadcasting
  26. Corporation, will continue to air -- presumably to larger
  27. audiences than ever.
